ASCO Advocacy Day
On Wednesday September 16, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) held its annual Advocacy Day. A contingent of ASCO and PSOH members (pictured below) from across the state met with the offices of several members of congress representing Pennsylvania.
This year's Advocacy Day was no different regardless of the necessary communication modifications. The visits were conducted by either phone or video conferencing. The "asks" focused on the funding of routine patient care costs for Medicaid patients taking part in clinical trials (Clinical Treatment Act, H.R. 913), seeking further congressional support for the Safe Step Act (H.R. 2279/S. 2546) and telehealth legislation made so important by the pandemic. We requested critical financial support of the NIH/NCI to help mitigate interruptions in research and clinical trials brought on by COVID-19. “The ‘asks’ were all received quite well,” noted Dr. Edward Balaban, PSOH past president and state liaison to ASCO, “Interaction with our members of congress, receiving questions and providing information, is always important.”
